Ian Burgess

Comptroller

Ian leads the University’s Budget and Financial Reporting Departments, which deliver budget oversight and financial reporting to the campus community, UBC’s Board of Governors, external stakeholders and the general public.

He oversees the delivery of finance support to all academic and administrative support units across the Vancouver campus. Ian also provides oversight to the Finance function at UBC Okanagan.

As Comptroller for the University, Ian’s priorities include developing accurate and transparent budget processes, improving management reporting, and strengthening the delivery of financial support to the campus community.

Ian has spent over 30 years at UBC. He held numerous roles in the Internal Audit, Financial Services, Financial Reporting and Budgets and VP Research + International departments before becoming the Comptroller in 2007.

Prior to joining UBC, he worked with the Office of the Auditor General in Victoria, the Dene Tha Tribal Administration in Northern Alberta, and Peat Marwick Mitchell and Co. (now KPMG) in Montreal, where he earned his Chartered Accounting designation.

Ian obtained his Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University.

Ian is a member of the Management Committee at the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies at UBC. He is also a special advisor to the UBC University Neighbourhood Association, a Board member of the YVR Art Foundation, and a Board member of Ecojustice.
